Globalizing Yoga
June 27 + 30, 9-11am ET
Steven Vose
Yoga has grown into a multi-billion-dollar global industry over the past half century. This course will read portions of the recent book by Prof. Andrea Jain, Peace Love Yoga: The Politics of Global Spirituality (2020), to begin to help us map the global dynamics of this industry. We will focus on how the global turn to neoliberal forms of capitalism has given rise to the conditions in which Yoga has arisen as both a fitness practice, marketed a quasi-spiritual lifestyle and practiced – and profited–by mostly non-Indian teachers, which has prompted the Hindu Right BJP government in India to help Indians profit from this global phenomenon, furthering their own nationalist agenda.
