The changing role of goddesses reveals changing collective values and views of gender over time. This course examines the role of goddesses--the exalted and the monstrous-- in Western mythology and religious culture, consulting ancient stories for insight on our contemporary world. We trace the evolution of goddesses through Mesopotamian myths, Greco-Roman literature, and the Hebrew Bible, and look at contemporary depictions of goddesses in art and fiction.
