This course examines imperialism in post-war and contemporary East Asian cinema with a focus on the influence and intersection of British, American, and Japanese imperialism. We will study films by Akira Kurosawa, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Chen Kaige, Wong Kar-wai, Park Chan-wook, and Bong Joon-ho. We will discuss these films both as exemplary works of art and as artifacts of the changing cinematic and political landscapes of the past eighty years.

Instructor: Laurena Tsudama is a Rutgers University PhD candidate in nineteenth-century literature with interests in philosophy and film. Most recently, she presented at the Modern Language Association and published with the JHI Blog and White Rose University Press. Her dissertation is titled "Deceivers and Dupes: Relational Deception in Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Fiction.”
