"Morphogenesis" is defined as the capacity of organisms to change form and the processes that undergird this transformation. Philosopher Catherine Malabou describes morphogenesis as a type of plasticity, or "the formation of form." Putting Malabou's work into conversation with critical race scholar Zakiyyah Jackson, this course explores how bodies are seen to change form—in fields spanning racial discourses, neuroscience, media, and law. We will examine how gendered, racialized bodies come to appear malleable and suitable for extraction, as well as how bodies resist dominant and imposed morphologies.
