The course examines hand knitting and crochet and their role in discourse on domesticity, handicraft, and homemaking. We assess ideas about space and making, labour and time, gender and work. We sample texts including Ann Oakley's The Sociology of Housework, Sarah Pink's Home Truths, and Judy Attfield's Wild Things To explore these creative material cultures and practices.

Instructor: Pragya Sharma is a Doctoral Researcher in History of Design at the University of Brighton. She currently researches recorded histories of domestic craft practices in India, including knitting, crochet, lace-making, and needlework. Her dissertation is provisionally titled "Cultures of Hand-knitting in North India: Provenance, Domesticity and Gendered Learning, c.1850-1980".
