This course looks at the lasting impact of Edward Said’s monumental work Orientalism on contemporary scholarship. We will explore how Said’s critique of Western depictions of the imagined East fundamentally reshaped disciplines including literature, history, and cultural studies. Students will analyze important concepts like alterity, trace the enduring relevance of Orientalism in postcolonial theory and global studies, and investigate how Said’s work continues to inform debates on identity and the politics of representation.

Instructor: Sophia Nasti is an independent scholar and editor who recieved her PhD from Harvard University. Her work lies at the intersection of religion, literature, and history and she is interested in questions of genre, power, and cultural production.
